ADDITIONAL:
From KQWC Radio: A Webster City man died late Tuesday afternoon as the result of an accident involving his motorcycle and a truck southwest of Fort Dodge. The victim is identified as 74-year-old Daniel Brown of Webster City. The Iowa State Patrol reported the accident happened just after 4:30 Tuesday afternoon at Highway 20 and Johnson Avenue. Reportedly an eastbound 2018 Indian motorcycle operated by Brown collided with a 2010 International straight truck driven by 57-year-old Daniel Lundberg of Lehigh. The Lundberg truck was southbound on Johnson Avenue and was crossing Highway 20 when he reportedly failed to yield the right of way to the Brown motorcycle. Brown was pronounced dead at the accident scene by the Webster County medical examiner. His body was taken to the state medical examiner in Ankeny for an autopsy. Lundberg was not injured in the accident. Assisting the Iowa State Patrol were members of the Webster County Sheriff's Department and the Fort Dodge and Moorland Fire Departments. |
From the MESSENGER September 1, 2023: Daniel Brown made Post 191 his missionWebster City veteran dies when his motorcycle collides with truck that was crossing U.S. 20— Submitted photo WEBSTER CITY — He was nearly everything to American Legion Post 191. Adjutant. Right-hand man. Friend. All that ended suddenly late Tuesday afternoon when the Indian motorcycle Daniel Brown was driving ran into the side of the truck that apparently pulled out in front of him. The accident at the intersection of U.S. Highway 20 and Johnson Avenue in Webster County took not simply the life of Brown, 74, of Webster City, but a bit of the heart of Post 191, where one of his closest friends, Richard Stroner, is commander. “He was a crucial part of our Legion. Essential. I mean, him taking care of our memberships. Taking meeting notes for years and posting them. Dan took care all of that,” Stroner said Wednesday. “We now have a large hole to fill.” That hole doesn’t simply reflect a loss of leadership; it’s also a loss of joy. Daniel Brown knew how to have fun. “He loved to play cribbage,” Stroner said. “We started card nights down at the Legion in January. Every Monday he would be down there.” In fact, he’s laughing in the last photo Steve Struchen has of him. It was taken at the August 21 card night. “He was a great person to have as a friend because he would help you out anytime you needed assistance,” Struchen, the post’s finance officer, said. “He headed up the veterans who maintained the Avenue of Flags displays at Graceland and Calvary cemeteries. Dan was in charge of the flag building on Ohio Street,” Struchen said. Brown, who graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High, moved to Webster City with his wife, Pearl, after serving in Vietnam. She died in 2017. During the Vietnam conflict he was postmaster on board an aircraft carrier in the combat zone, according to Stroner. In the 1980s in Webster City he led Boy Scout Troop 17, both as scoutmaster and assistant. More recently, he was a member of the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association and an Izaak Walton League officer. That all ended in the blink of an eye. Iowa State Patrol reported that a southbound 2010 International straight truck driven by Daniel Lundberg, 57, of Lehigh, drove across the two westbound lanes of U.S. 20, then failed to yield to the eastbound lanes, pulling from the intersection into the path of Brown’s motorcycle. It was about 4:30 in the afternoon. Daniel Brown died at the scene. “He had an unfulfilled goal of seeing the Freedom Rocks in all 99 counties,” Struchen said. Brown was pronounced dead by the Webster County medical examiner. His body was taken to the state medical examiner in Ankeny for an autopsy. Lundberg was not injured. ISP has not yet said if charges will be filed against him. Assisting the Iowa State Patrol were members of the Webster County Sheriff’s Department and the Fort Dodge and Moorland fire departments. The accident is still under investigation. |

I trust that Roy Tudor won't mind me reprinting his memory of Dan from our FDSH68 Facebook Page. Thank you Roy for your special memory.

"Dan was a GREAT MAN in every way! I just saw him at our 55th reunion and told him a story I told him every time I saw him around Dodge or Webster....I will NEVER forget the exact moment I met Dan our sophomore year, during August of '65. Me and the other football players that had played against each other from North and South Junior highs were coming together to become DODGERS and we were gathering outside the locker room at Dodger stadium to get ready for early practices. Here walking up towards me was a huge dude I had never seen before, and I said "you must have played for North cuz I know you weren't on our South team". He said nope, he was from a small town towards Webster City and he was ready to be a Dodger! WOW he was a load, muscled, athletic, and ready to hit the line, BUT I could tell he had a heart of gold and we were always friends after that, and he proceeded to kick butts on the Dodger line for the next 3 years!! A great ball player and an even greater man of great character!! I still am in shock as I'm sure everyone is, it's just surreal as Dan should have been with us at least many many more years, but he is with his beloved Pearl now in Heaven . I went to grade school with Pearl at Highland Park in Ft Dodge who was always just a cute sweetheart, what a beautiful couple! I loved them both and I know I will see them again. God Bless Dan, Pearl and their beautiful children, family and friends... Prayers for you all during this difficult time..."

Well said Roy, Dan will be missed. I didn't know Dan well but he always had a smile and took time to talk to me at each reunion. Gone way too early, I am glad I spent a few minutes at our reunion to say hello to him.

Funny memory from Friday night at our reunion! Dan was responsible for setting up the welcome video. He and Larry got to Fort Dodge from Webster City and he had left his laptop in Webster City. We teased him, "You had one job" and he just laughed that Dan Brown laugh and went back to Webster City. Great guy with a great smile and laugh. He will be greatly missed!
